9/2/2023 0 Comments 50mm on aps c vs full frameEven I was surprised at some of these results and I did each test fair and square according to my rules below, which have been my comparison rules for seven years because it shows REAL WORLD shooting (not nonsense that no one does when shooting an not pro studio or lit images from a shooter who is sponsored by a camera company). This was a blast to do, and shows the STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES of Micro 4/3, APS-C and Full Frame cameras, specifically the E-M1, X-T1 and A7s. It's just that the lens is also capable of filling in those edge details the aps-c sensor is never going to see.īut the image captured by the aps-c sensor will be cropped in, with a narrower field of view, than the image captured by the FF sensor in either case.MIRRORLESS BATTLE! Micro 4/3 vs APS-C vs Full Frame! If you put a 50mm FF lens in front of an aps-c sensor, it'll have the same field of view as an aps-c 50mm lens would. If you put a 50mm aps-c lens in front of a full frame sensor, it'll be the same field of view as a 50mm FF lens, only you'll likely see the edges getting dark and blurry. The only difference between a crop lens and a full-frame lens is that the former doesn't need to be engineered to reliably create a clear, bright image circle quite as far out to the edges of the circle, because it's not made for a sensor that goes that far out.īecause they don't need to be engineered for a clear image as far out to the the edges of the image circle, the aps-c lens can often have simpler optics, and be lighter or smaller than the FF lens. The sensors then capture that light and record it as image data. Lenses project image circles onto the sensors (or film). Your full-frame picture can sit nested in a medium format picture the same way your aps-c picture can sit nested in your FF picture). (There's nothing really "full" about "full frame," other than it's widely used enough that it makes for a good baseline frame of refernce. That's why people call aps-c "crop" for short. Blow it up to the same viewing size, and you see you now have an image with a narrower field of view. Now think of a smaller rectangle inside it - there's the image captured with an aps-c sensor. Think of a rectangular picture - there's the image captured with a full-frame sensor. It's the sensor that makes the difference in field of view, not the lens' measurement in milimeters.
